Arthur J. Jacobs, the Firm’s senior partner, is a graduate of the City College of New York and the Cornell Law School. In addition to his litigation and trial experience, Mr. Jacobs is also well known for his expertise in publishing, trademark, copyright, defamation, new media, and corporate and transactional matters. Additionally, he lectures attorneys and law school students in the fields of intellectual property and publishing law.
Robert J. deBrauwere
Robert J. deBrauwere is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (cum laude), where he served as Senior Managing Editor of the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal. He specializes in the areas of intellectual property, trademarks, copyrights, entertainment, publishing, pre-publication counseling, new media and licensing, and lectures attorneys and law school students in the areas of trademark law, defamation, and publishing law. Before attending law school, Mr. deBrauwere worked in the areas of concert and theater sound and lighting production, and was a senior logistics analyst and did computer programming for Unisys Corporation.
John J. Lynch
John J. Lynch earned his J.D. in 1983 from St. John’s University School of Law, where he served as an Associate Editor of the Law Review. From 1983 to 1986, he clerked for the New York State Court of Appeals and served as the Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Fritz W. Alexander, III. Mr. Lynch has practiced with the law firms Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander & Ferdon, Squadron Ellenoff Plesent & Lehrer, Brown Raysman & Millstein and Dillingham & Murphy, LLP. His expertise is in litigation and transactional practice focused on intellectual property, licensing information technology, computer and technology systems litigation, and media and entertainment law. Mr. Lynch has been a speaker on topics related to intellectual property and information technology at bar associations and industry groups, and is the author of published articles on a variety of topics.
John F. Burleigh
John F. Burleigh, the Firm’s senior counsel, is a graduate of Cornell University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago , and is a graduate of the Harvard Law School ( cum laude ). Following law school, Mr. Burleigh practiced as a litigator with Cravath, Swaine & Moore, as a Staff Attorney to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and at Schwab Goldberg Price & Dannay. Mr. Burleigh specializes in litigation in the federal and state courts, as well as more generally in the areas of copyrights, trademarks, entertainment publishing and licensing.
Barbara J. Lipshutz
Barbara J. Lipshutz, one of the Firm’s counsel, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania ( summa cum laude ), where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and of the Harvard Law School (cum laude). After law school, Ms. Lipshutz practiced law as a litigator in Philadelphia for 10 years with Drinker Biddle & Reath; Venzie, Phillips & Warshawer; and Sprague & Sprague, before moving to the New York area in 1996. Ms. Lipshutz specializes in litigation, pre-publication counseling, contests and sweepstakes law, and is admitted to practice in New York and Pennsylvania.
Kathleen M. Conkey
Kathleen M. Conkey served as Vice President & Senior Counsel, Litigation and Intellectual Property, MTV Networks, from 2004-2006, where she was primarily responsible for the pre-broadcast review work of the company’s channels, including MTV, VH1, CMT, LOGO and others. Previously, she practiced for nine years at CBS/King World Productions, where, among others duties, she vetted “Inside Edition,” a daily newsmagazine show. As an in-house production counsel to MTV Networks, CBS Television and King World, she was production counsel for hundreds of television programs of every conceivable format. Ms. Conkey focuses her practice on media and entertainment law, working with television networks, newspapers, magazines, documentarians, filmmakers, production companies, internet companies, reporters and writers. She offers advice and counsel on risks and liabilities in the areas of copyright and trademark fair uses and infringements; privacy; defamation; media and newsgathering torts; as well as contractual work and litigation for individuals and companies in all the arts. Ms. Conkey started her law career as a litigation associate at Debevoise and Plimpton and at Lankenau Kovner & Kurtz (now merged with Davis Wright Tremaine). She received her J.D with highest honors from Rutgers Law—Newark, where she was a member of Law Review.
Peter M. Langrind
Peter M. Langrind is a graduate of The University of Virginia and New York Law School, where he was a Notes and Comments Editor for The Journal of International and Comparative Law. Mr. Langrind began his career at the Manhattan office of the intellectual property law firm Ladas & Parry, and has practiced trademark and licensing law for twelve years in New York City and international trademark law in Cologne, Germany.
Robert N. Freeman
Robert N. Freeman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (cum laude), received an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a J.D. from the New York University School of Law (cum laude), where he was Symposium Editor for The Annual Survey of American Law. Following law school, Mr. Freeman acquired extensive expertise in media, copyright, trademark, advertising, and licensing law as an attorney for the National Broadcasting Company, where he vetted programming for the Dateline and Today shows. After leaving NBC, Mr. Freeman extended his media practice focus to publishing at Condé Nast Publications, where he was involved with the pre-publication review of Wired, Glamour, Allure, Bon Appetit, and GQ. Mr. Freeman concentrates his practice in the areas of pre-publication review, intellectual property licensing, and media law.
Bertie H. Cheng
Bertie H. Cheng is a 1998 graduate of Harvard University (cum laude) and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (J.D. 2005), where she concentrated in Intellectual Property and Communications Law and was a member of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution. Before attending law school, Ms. Cheng worked as a financial analyst for an investment bank and developed and maintained web sites for media and other businesses. Ms. Cheng is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey.
